Stitch Fiddle Alternative: When to Switch, When to Stay
By Threadhood Content Team · · 6 min read

You found a stitch fiddle alternative search because something got in the way: a color cap, a chart limit, a price, or a feature you wanted. Fair. It helps to know what the limits actually are before you leave. Any stitch fiddle alternative has limits of its own.
We checked the Stitch Fiddle pricing page on 3 November 2026 and read the other tools' own pages. We make Threadhood, so we say below when Stitch Fiddle is the better pick.
What are the limits of Stitch Fiddle free?
Here is what its pricing page says, next to ours.

Table 1. Limits as stated on the Stitch Fiddle pricing page, checked 3 November 2026, and on Threadhood. Prices change, so confirm before you pay.
Stitch Fiddle's page says "The free version stays free forever." It also says:
"Basic design tools and using your charts is always free, even after your subscription expires, no matter how many charts you have."
Stitch Fiddle, Premium pricing
That is a generous promise. Your old charts stay usable.
The page lists these Premium-only features: special stitches (half, quarter, knots, beads), layers, vector downloads, converting charts into written instructions, and collaboration. It also shows one-off payments with no automatic renewal.
On price, the gap is small. Stitch Fiddle's yearly price is $30 and ours is $29, a $1 difference. Monthly, it is $5.00 against our $4.99. Our October comparison post recorded $33 a year and $5.50 a month for Stitch Fiddle. The page now shows less, so prices clearly move. Check it yourself.
When should you stay with Stitch Fiddle?
Stay if any of these apply:
- You need special stitches. Half stitches, quarter stitches, knots and beads are Premium features there. Threadhood makes full crosses only. We have no backstitch, half or quarter stitches yet.
- You want layers or written instructions. Both are on its Premium list. We have neither.
- You work with others. Collaboration is a Premium feature there. We do not offer it.
- Your design is huge. Its free grid is 300 x 300 and Premium goes to 1,000 x 1,000. Ours stops at 300 stitches wide.
- You need more than 80 colors. Premium allows 250.
If those describe your project, a stitch fiddle alternative will not help. Stay.
Is there a free alternative to Stitch Fiddle?
Yes, several, with different jobs. Fairly:
FlossCross. Free, no registration. It imports a photo or starts blank, lists 498 DMC colors, and keeps patterns on your device. Its site says "All patterns are stored only in your browser locally and are not transferred anywhere else." Visit FlossCross.
Pic2Pat. Photo in, free PDF chart out, with floss and skeins listed. It also has an optional kit. Its home page does not state limits, so read what you get on Pic2Pat first.
Pattern Keeper. Not a chart maker. It is an Android app that reads cross stitch PDFs. You can highlight symbols and mark stitches as finished. Its site says: "Mark stitches as finished and get a tally of how many stitches you finished." It also shows stitches left per thread. It has a free trial and a one-time in-app purchase, and works with many but not all designers' PDFs. On iOS it works "with limited functionality," where you photograph a chart and import it. It is made by Datadromeda AB. See Pattern Keeper.
Threadhood. Free to chart in a browser, with the photo staying on your device. Pick DMC (489 colors) or Anchor (445). Every thread shows its nearest other-brand match with a ΔE, a measure of color difference. Free accounts save 3 charts. Studio adds unlimited saved charts, stitch-by-stitch progress, a thread stash with shopping lists, and the printable PDF kit.
We did not check how Pattern Keeper handles our PDFs, so we make no claim there.
Where a different tool helps
Three cases make a stitch fiddle alternative worth a try.
Your chart passes a color cap
We ran a Labrador photo at 150 stitches wide. The grid was 150 x 100, which is 15,000 stitches. At 60 colors the chart used 60 threads. At 50 colors it used 50. Both are 15,000 stitches, and both are far below Stitch Fiddle's free grid of 300 x 300.
But 60 threads is over its free cap of 50. So a photo with soft shading may want more colors than the free version allows. You can lower the color count, or pay for Premium, or pick a tool with a higher cap. Our cap is 80.
Fewer colors are not always worse. A cross stitch pattern maker that drops from 60 to 50 may give a cleaner chart that is easier to stitch. Try both and look.
You buy thread in one brand
If you stitch with Anchor but the pattern says DMC, you need to know how close the swap is. Threadhood shows the nearest other-brand thread and its ΔE: under 1 exact, 1 to 2 very close, 2 to 5 close, 5 or more approximate. Our DMC to Anchor chart lists all 489 DMC colors this way.
You track stitching on your phone
Studio marks progress stitch by stitch and keeps a stash with shopping lists. If you already have PDF charts from designers, Pattern Keeper is made for those. They solve different problems.

Keyword Planner estimates for the US, October 2025 to September 2026, put "stitch fiddle" at about 49,500 searches a month and "pattern keeper" at 3,600. These are rounded estimates that group close variants. They show that both are well known, not which is better.
